Our Founding Story
Our company’s story is one of dedication, growth, and first-of-its-kind achievements in Tanzania’s mining sector. Here are some of the key milestones in our journey:
Our Journey & Milestones
2012:God Mwanga Gems Ltd is founded by Mr. Godlisten Mathayo Mwanga and Mrs. Sia Godlisten Mwanga – visionary local entrepreneurs with a mission to add value to Tanzania’s minerals and share them with the world. From the start, their goal was to build a world-class mining and mineral trading enterprise grounded in local expertise and global standards.
2017:Establishment of our first graphite mining and processing plant at Mererani in Manyara Region – making GMG the pioneer of graphite production in Tanzania. This maiden facility, located near the Tanzanite hills of Mirerani, marked the country’s first-ever commercial graphite operation, capable of producing tens of thousands of tonnes annually. It was a bold step that put Tanzania on the map for this critical mineral used in electric vehicle batteries and other hi-tech applications.
2018:Scaling up operations and achieving first production of battery-grade graphite flake concentrate with ~95% purity. Our Mererani plant proved the viability of locally processed graphite, producing high-quality output that met international standards. Over 70% of our graphite concentrate comprised large flake graphite – a testament to the exceptional quality of our resource.
2020–2022: Diversification and regional expansion. We broadened our portfolio beyond graphite – tapping into coal deposits in Ruvuma, quartz and feldspar in Tanga, and even venturing into sustainable agriculture with a sisal cultivation project. By 2022, we had cultivated 2,000 hectares of sisalin Handeni District (Tanga Region) as part of our commitment to innovative growth and sustainability. During this period, we also opened the Kwedikabu graphite mine in Tanga Region, a fully operational site equipped with advanced laboratories and machinery, adding 5,000 tons per month of production capacity.
2024:Recognition at the highest levels and community impact. In a proud moment for GMG, the Honorable Minister of Minerals, Antony Mavunde laid the foundation stone for our new graphite processing facility in Kwamsisi, Tanga – underscoring the national importance of our work. We also intensified our community engagement, partnering with local and government initiatives to improve education, healthcare, and infrastructure around our mining areas. Kwamsisi Graphite Plant, only began operations in January 2025, is a cutting-edge facility equipped with advanced crushing, grinding, and multi-stage flotation circuits designed to protect and preserve flake integrity throughout processing. Leveraging this modern technology, the plant consistently achieves high recovery rates and product quality, producing graphite concentrate with up to 95% TGC (Total Graphitic Carbon). With a current output of approximately 25,000 tonnes per month (TPM)
